Snickerdoodles were a recipe in the first edition of my husband’s family cookbook, and a favorite at many of my own family gatherings. These were some of the first I cookies I baked and distributed at PAX as a member of the Cookie Brigade, and not only did they sell out faster than my monster cookies, but they were MUCH better received than the carob vegan cookies I made that year. Go figure. 🙂

Winter family Snickerdoodles

  • 1 cup organic shortening (look for Spectrum brand)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs (large)
  • 2 3/4 cups ultragrain flour (sifted)
  • 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix first 3 ingredients. Sift dry ingredients and add. Add vanilla extract. Form in balls the size of a walnut. Roll in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. Place 2 inches apart an bake at 400 for about 10 minutes.

Yields 3 dozen cookies
