Do you guys love Costco as much as I do? I was already on board when I learned about their employment practices, and then when they announced their sustainability practices I was 100% sold. Lately though, as they expand their vegan, organic, and fair trade selection, our love affair has gotten way more serious. My Costco organic shopping list has doubled in the past few months – tofu, quinoa, bulgar, brown rice, chia seeds, strawberries, blueberries, kale, arugula, half and half, milk, eggs, the list goes on. Wonderful, super healthy, stuff! Unfortunately (well, for my waistline), one of their fair trade product offerings is a 3.5lb bag of chocolate chips. How exactly am I expected to say no to that?

Kirkland Old Fashioned Chocolate Chip Cookies

As far as I’m aware, it is a rule that every bag of chocolate chips must have a recipe for chocolate chip cookies on the back. Costco’s features an “old fashioned” recipe, which I think might be code for “no holds barred – full fat, full sugar, fully awesome”? Something like that. These were darn good, but I only kept two in the house – the rest headed off to work to save me from myself. 🙂 I think my only complaint is that they’re so tasty that I found myself rationalizing setting the oven to 375 in this heatwave!

Old Fashioned Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cups salted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs (large)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups chocolate chips

Optional

  • 1 cup nuts (of your choice)

Note

Recipe adapted from Kirkland Signature Chocolate Chips

Directions

Combine butter, sugar and brown sugar in a medium-size bowl. Blend with a mixer until smooth.

Add eggs and vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly with an electric mixer on medium speed.

Add baking soda and salt. Slowly add flour until thoroughly blended. Fold in chocolate chips with a spatula.

Using a cookie scoop, drop onto baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes. Yields about 30 cookies.

Update 10/22/14:  I often try new cookie recipes as blog-fodder, so I haven’t made this particular recipe as regularly as I used to, but I made them again the other day after one of my readers indicated a potential problem with the recipe. I followed the recipe as written here, and the cookies turned out great. My only guess is that the Kirkland recipe uses the word “thoroughly” a lot, and that may lead to overmixing the dough. Mix your dough until everything is well incorporated, but don’t go crazy – there’s no need to continue mixing after the dough looks even in color. HTH! – Leesha

  1. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe you posted this yesterday! I have been looking all morning for this recipe and all the other Kirkland Chocolate Chip recipes are different. This is the one I am looking for! Thanks!

  2. I love Costco too, but I had a bad experience with their recipe. The cookies didn’t hardly rise. They only needed 8 minutes at the most versus the recommended amount. But most important, the amount of vanilla is DOUBLE or TRIPLE any other recipe and I think it is a error in the recipe and it affects the taste. Immediately after making my Costco recipe double batch, I made a double batch using all the same ingredients and the Toll House recipe. Now it produced the cookies I expected. I personally think it is process of adding the eggs individually that makes the difference. The flour dough was absolutely fluffy compared to my other batch. For full disclosure, maybe I over beat the eggs when doing the Costco recipe. I will repeat in the future to see if any other factor was involved but I KNOW all measurements were correct. And the chips were GREAT!

    1. Hi Herman – Sorry to hear these didn’t turn out well for you! I think you may be on to something with your eggs because I have had great success with this recipe in the past. In any case, I will give these cookies another try, paying close attention to follow the recipe as written here, and update you with my findings. Thanks for visiting and for your thoughtful feedback!

      1. I made them today, but they melted together into one big cookie. The taste was great, but texture of dough was a bit moist.. not sure what happened

  3. Thank you for the recepie. The cookies turn out great all the time. Our Familiy’s favorite. I did not have enough chocolate chips today, so I had to add raisins. It was a good addition.

  4. I loooooove this recipe and thanks for posting it. In a pinch I went to the store to buy Nestle Toll House chips but don’t like their recipe and LOOOOVE the Costco one so I googled it and your blog popped up! Whew!!!

These come out perfect for me every time, but I too only mix until ingredients are blended so as not to overmix. I get sooooooo many compliments on these.

  5. I originally found this on the chocolate chip bag from costco too haha
I lost the recipe and this is my go to copy! (aka my parents threw away the bag then I moved out and don’t shop at coscto haha)
Thanks for posting it! Its the best recipe I’ve used and was happy you shared it! Also for fun I did it with rice flour to try to make close to gluten free cookies and they tasted great! Just a little more crumbly 😛 Oh and also yea the cook times are weird for me sometimes it takes shorter time or longer time so just keep an eye on it!

  6. Phew! Thank you for posting this recipe- I was beginning to panic! This is the very best chocolate chip recipe ever and such a huge favorite with family and friends.

  7. I tried this recipe in one of my YouTube videos, Leesha I made sure to write the link to your website, almost everyone I know watched the video tried the cookies and they loved it!! so thank you a lot for sharing it,I will leave you the link to the video in case you want to watch it 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxPDLgLm7I8

  8. Hi, I just made the recipe, for me I bake them 18 min, at 12 min the look with no gold color ,what could it be

  9. I made these cookie per recipe except I used Bob’s Red Mill 1-1 Baking Flour for a gluten free treat. I used a 1 Tablespoon scoop, and got 60 2.5″ cookies (a good size for kids). I cooled the first batch a couple of minutes on the cookie sheet, and they didn’t release easily (though they came off in one piece). I put the second batch on parchment paper, and removed them immediately. They came off easily. I baked them two sheets at a time for 6 minutes. After 6 minutes, I switched shelved, and turned them back to front, and baked for 6 minutes more. The were light brown after 12 minutes. They got the 5-year old approval as well as thumbs up from grandpa. I’ll make these again.

  10. These cookies have great flavor but were extremely thin and done in about 8 minutes. They seemed very dark on the outside, borderline burned but raw in the middle. Made this recipe twice and got the same results. Even tried chilling the dough for several hours and adjusted to a lower temperature. I want to get this figured out because the potential is there!!!

  11. Thank you for this Costco recipe. It turns out great every time even though I use 1 cup gluten-free all purpose flour and 1cup Almond Flour(also from Costco) and I use ghee butter that I prepare at home with the butter from Costco, because the flavor is awesome for this recipe. I will also give as gifts! I get lots of compliments. I am a great cook and baker, just a gift, I guess. For those who do not get good results, keep practicing and never give up cause you can do it.

  12. For those who live at high elevation the bake time is closer to 8-9 minutes and it could use a little more flour.

  13. I have just sent this recipe to my 40 year old son who has been the ‘tasting recipient’ of these tasty cookies for years!

We are both GF but I substitute the flour and add in a good extra helping of the vanilla as I love the richer taste.

I would offer here to keep watch while baking. Getting the cookies out of the oven before they are over baked makes all the difference to the taste.

My biggest problem is to resist tasting the gooey delicious cookies on the cooling rack!
